friends ,for basics 1st u shud go through ncrt and cbsc 6th to 10th history and geo books ,i wud suggest for history l.mukerji volumes of ancient medivial mordern history .u will get entire scenes perfectly.
The best books if you ask me are the school history and geography books that you have read till class -10.If you can brush up them properly,you are through.Still to name some good publishers there are G.K.Publishers,Made Easy,Upakars and a very good magazine called competitive refresher.Good Luck!

History- NCERT books of class XI and XII, Freedom Struggle (published by National Book Trust)
Geography- Class XII books of Geography (NCERT), a good atlas.
"Upkar Prakashan" and "Pratyogita Darpan" are the best books for preparation of Civil Service examinations as they cover almost each subject.
