Dear friend,
No one can tell you as to which subjects you should choose for UPSC exam.
It is you who has to decide yourself. It all depends on your interest as to which subjects you are more interested and have in depth knowledge.
See you are a Biotechnology student so if you feel you have a goods command over the subject you can choose biotechnology as one of your
optional subject but anyhow if you feel that you can do much better in other subjects other than this then you can choose that that particular subject.
There is no restriction in this exam in choosing subjects. Any candidate from any stream can choose subjects from any stream.
You must have seen some engineering students choosing subjects other tan their specialised subjects as they feel more confident in subjects like history, sociology etc. If you also feel like this you can choose other subject combination.
So analyze your interests and choose according to that.
When you choose subjects start preparing from basics like NCERT books and as you build up your foundation you can move up to higher level to have deep knowledge about the subject.
I would advise you to read one of the good newspaper daily. Its editorial will help you in writing essays in your optional papers.
You can also subscribe to some good magazines which also covers many essay topics with diversified topics.
