Friend, please note that# The question paper of General Studies of Preliminary Examination of IAS, IRS, IPS etc is quite same. But only the difference only in the question paper of Optional subjects.# But this year, as per new guidelines of UPSC, there is only question papers of General Studies. And there is no any question paper of optional subjects.# From the year 2013 onward, aspirants of IAS, IPS or IRS have to undergo their same Preliminary Examination.# But at the time of mains examination, aspirants of IAS, IPS or IRS have to undergo different question papers as per their selected optional subjects.
Yes, Paper I ie., General Studies paper is alomost common for IAS,IPS and IRS examination because it deals with History,Civics,Geograpghy etc.,
But During Mains examination only the syllabus and Question paper will be differ because Optional subjects are different for different examinations.
Finally, iam concluding that if you prepare hardly for Preliminary exam then you will get success in mains examination.

There is Only One Way to Become an IAS Officer and It is After Clearing UPSC exam.
>> If you clear UPSC Exam then you can become IAS Officer.
>> There are Three Steps in Civil Service/UPSC Exam:
1) Prelims Exam
2) Mains Exam
3) Personal Interview
>> Procedure of Examination:
>> First Notification of Exam is Released
>> Candidate fill form for Preferred Post.
>> Than Date of Prelim Exam is Released.
>> Prelim Exam is Conducted after 1 and Half month
>> After Prelims Exams Result is declare and candidate who have cleared Prelims will fill form for mains Exam and Select Subject
>> Main Exam is conducted and after 1 and Half month Result is Declared.
>> The Candidate who have cleared Mains exam will face Personal Interview.
>> After Personal Interview, Name of Candidate is Declared and Appointed for Appropriate

Dear there are various posts and sections comes under IAS Officer post and civil service examination and IRS is one of them so preliminary examination paper will be the same for both posts because IRS comes under IAS and you get IRS post on the basis of your rank scored in the examination and through your preference so you should not worry about this and keep your preparation continue for next year's civil service examination and examination pattern is following for IAS :
Preliminary exam : Objective Type - 200 marks and qualifying in prelims is mandatory and there will be following two papers conducted
General Studies
CSAT - Civil Service Aptitude Test
Mains Examination - 7 papers in conventional type pattern and qualifying in each paper is mandatory
Paper I - Essay - 200 marks, English Comprehension 100 marks = 300 marks
Paper II, III, IV and V - General Studies - I, II, III and IV - 250 marks each
Paper VI and VII - Optional Subject Paper - I and II - 250 marks each
List of optional subjects in which, you may choose any one for Paper VI and VII

If you are confused about IAS and IRS then I would like to tell you that both posts are IAS grade posts and IRS comes under IAS examination and you become IRS on the basis of your rank in the IAS examination that is why you do not need to worry about this examination and just keep your preparation continue for next year's civil service examination
This year UPSC board has conducted civil service prelims examination at 26th of May 2013 and mains examination will be conducted at 1st of December 2013 so please prepare hard for the next year exam and use different books and if possible then you must take help of any good coaching institute to prepare for this examination because coaching institutes are really helpful in case of preparing for competitive examinations that is why start giving at least 10 hours everyday from now for your preparation so you could score good marks in civil service prelims 2014 and qualify
