Prelims exams pattern:-
This exam has 2 papers.
First of all manage your time.
Make complete strategy for syllabus.
Make English effective.
Broaden your decision making skill, general mental ability.
Solve each problem quickly.
Clear all your doubts.
Read news paper regularly to keep your self updated about general knowledge.

For the post like ips and ias
And you have to write the cse exam for it
And from the point of the optional subjects
Better would be to choose your self
As choose the subects in which you have interest and which you likes most

As you mentioned that you have completed BA and MA.
In such condition you can apply for CSE.
You should choose the optional subjects like History, Geography, Psychology etc.
You should choose the subject of your Interest.
For the preparation of civil service exam you should join any good leading coaching for the preparation.
Study with NCERT books and reference books.
You should manage your time as per the requirement of syllabus.
Study on the basis of concept. You should cleared regarding concepts.
Prelims exam contains only two subject general studies and General English.
You should read news paper and competitive magazine.
Listen news and be aware about current affairs.
Read English newspaper for English preparation.
Develop the ability to understand correct English.
You should also practice previous year question paper.
