UPSC prelims exam syllabus is as follows-
Paper 1 - 200 marks - duration 2 hours
Current events
History
Geography
Indian politics and governance
Economics
Social studies
Etc and other general knowledge topics which an educated person has to have knowledge about it.
Paper 2- 200 marks- duration 2 hours
Comprehension
Logical questions
Decision making
General mental ability
basic numeracy

Preliminary examination is the first stage which you need to clear well.If you qualify in prelims then your way for main examination is clear.And you are on a right path focusssing first on prelims examination.See the pattern of prelimainary examination is that it consits of two multiple choice question papers.There will be two papers.Both of 2 hrs duration each.Paper 1 will be on General Studies.You cannot make a shortcut here.You should have knowledge of history,geography,economics,general science and current affairs.In this paper question will be even from environment and biodiversity.For general science you may refer class 9th & 10th Science book .You may also refer NCERT social science manual.
Paper 2 will asked question on English Comprehension,Reasoning,Verbal Ability and aptitude.For this you may refer RS AGarwala Quantitative Aptitude.You may also go for English comprehension as well as Verbal reasoning book.Besides these develop a habit of reading newspaper.It will improve your English and increase your vocabulary.Help a lot in solving comprehension questions.If you develop a habit of regular studies.
For eligibility criteria I hope you have not crossed the age of 30 years that is the maximum upper age limit relaxation for UR category.However it has been relaxed by three years for OBCs and 5 years for SC/ST .

It is nice that you want to join civil services exam like IAS exam.
IAS exam is very tough exam. you have to concert ate on its all parts to crack this exam.
As you know that IAS exam consist three stages;-
>>Prelims exam, Mains exam and Interview
Prelims exam consist two papers of General studies.
In mains exam, you have to choose optional subjects.
Therefore you have to concentrate on General studies, Indian History, Current Affairs to crack this exam.
You have to choose those optional Subjects in which you have full Knowledge.

IAS prelims consists of five papers....
PAPER I- Indian languages (300 marks)
PAPER II- English (300)
PAPER III- Esaay (200)
PAPER IV and V- General studies (300 marks each)
Out of this PAPER-I and II are more important as they are the qualifying paper if you fail or if you are less than cut-off foe paper I and II you will be disqualified without attempting the other two papers. The marks can be improved in essay writing.. You should improve more on General studies as many loose marks because there is negative marking for MCQ in paper 4 and 5...

Paper I - Section I - Essay Writing - 200 marks and English Comprehension will be in Section II for 100 marks

There will be a separate list available in the application form of main exam and you can opt anyone optional subject for both of these papers and all these other 6 papers contains - 250 marks for each
Personality Test - 275 marks and if you quality both prelims and main examination then only you will be eligible for this interview
