dear aspirant,
syllabus of mains almost covers the syllabus of prelims
hence it is better if you prepare for the mains during your preparation for prelims
Prelims is an gate to reach mains. amongst 5,00,000 candidates almost 4,85,000 get filtered at prelims and only near about 15,000 reaches mains. amongst only 1000 gets on job. so you can understand how much competition is there. so both exams are important for every inspirant. name it self says "mains" is more important.
Both the exams have their equal importance. If you do not concentrate on the prelims part, then you might not be able to go to the mains exam. Therefore It Is advisable that you should focus more onto the prelims part and along with it you can go side by side the preparation of the subject you are about to chose in your mains. This is the best strategy which is suggested by most of the toppers of the civil services exam
Dear,
After completing successfully the Preliminary examination, you can appear for Main examination. So at first, you have to concentrate upon the preliminary examination. So you have to start your preparation both intensively and extensively so that you feel comfortable and confidence in appearing the examination. To know more details please visit www.upsc.gov.in Thanks..... best of luck.....
Ofcourse Prelims is the starting stage so first of all... Concentrate on Prelims .
Because without getting Prelims clear, you can't go for Mains . So try to focus on Prelims alongwith the Mains exams...Because their is short interval for the preparation of the main after the Prelims are over.
I hope you got my point.
All the best bro.
you shoul focus on both the exams. but i think you should focus on prelims more., since you are eligible for mains only when you clear prelims.
all the best
happy learning!!!
Dear first of all I would like to congratulate you in advance that you have chosen a right way to make your career and this stream is absolutely incredible in India and if you work hard then you may go to the top of the India and may reach at President post and you have mentioned that you are pursuing BA first year then I would also like to tell you that as for as my views are concerned that there is no better way for you than civil services sector and if you work hard then you may achieve too many targets in the way
Now here comes your question that where should you focus more to get qualified then I would like to say that both of the prelims and mains examination are mandatory to prepared well because qualifying in both exams
Preliminary Examination : There will be two papers conducted in this exam in objective type pattern and each paper contains 200 marks and qualifying in this examination is compulsory
Now you can see the if you could not qualify preliminary examination then you will not be eligible to apply for mains exam and you will be declared as failed in this recruitment process that is why study is must for both of these papers conducted in prelims and papers are - CSAT and General Studies and you will have to get good command over both subjects then only you will be able to qualify this examination otherwise you will have no chance again so just think about the importance of the preliminary examination and I can directly say that you can not imagine for mains exam without qualifying preliminary examination
Mains Examination : There will be following 7 papers conducted in mains examination
Paper I - Essay - 200 marks, English Language and Comprehension - 100 marks
Paper II - General Studies I - 250 marks
Paper III - General Studies II - 250 marks
Paper IV - General Studies III - 250 marks
Paper V - General Studies IV - 250 marks
Paper VI - Optional Paper I - 250 marks
Paper VII - Optional Paper II - 250 marks
Total marks allotted for all papers - 1800 and qualifying in each paper is compulsory
Now here comes a real critical situation and real test for IAS post because qualifying in each paper of mains examination is compulsory and how much you will study for that, you can imagine so that you have to think about it in depth that how much time you have to provide for the preparation of mains examination because this is the main exam which is responsible for your merit ranking when prelims is only screening test and there will be no part of prelims exam marks in the selection procedure means prelims marks will not be added to mains or to any further selection procedure so that you have to focus more on mains examination just after qualifying preliminary
Here you can see that all papers are conventional means no objective type and you have to write everything well to qualify and first paper is for Essay and English Comprehension so I expect that there will be no problem in qualifying this exam because you will be given topics to write Essay and Comprehension in English Language but next four papers are for general studies which demands hard and harder practice and you will have to cover all the topics of general studies section then only you will be able to qualify in all papers and you need to use various books and previous years question papers for all these papers then you will be asked for optional paper where you have to choose any one subject provided by the UPSC board in the official recruitment notification and you may choose any one from that list and I would like to say that you should choose that subject that is easy for you and suppose your major specialization subject is - Political Science and International Relations in BA or any other as Public Administration or History or any Literature subject then you should choose that but only that which is more interesting for you and prepare well for that exam and this will be the easy way for you to qualify this examination
Now you can see that both of the stage of exams are essential for you and you will have to get qualified in all stages to full fill your dreams and to get the goal you need some assistance and a proper guidance which is only available in good coaching institute so that you should find out a best institute for the preparation of this exam and begin your preparation and you will get all type of strategy and preparation materials for this exam and will be able to get a good environment for study
Interview cum Personality Test - 275 marks and you will get the call for interview only after qualifying prelims and mains examination and below I have uploaded complete notification for this exam that provides complete information about this examination so please download and keep visiting at www.upsc.gov.in for more details
All the best

Hello Guest,
Hi,
I t is good to hear that you are preparing for CSAT while pursuing Bachelor in Arts degree course.
As it will be your first attempt it is very obvious to get confused.
You must concentrate in prelims more than mains exam now.
Don't forget you have to complete your B.A.
When your prelims preparation is at a satisfactory stage then you may go for mains.
And after studying some percentage of mains syllabus ,then came back to prelims preparation again.
Never start preparing for mains exam without building confidence in prelims preparation.
Thank you.
