Dear,
The choice of the optional paper in the main examination is really a very crucial decision that you have to take. But to my mind, I will suggest you that you may choose your parents subject as your optional paper, because it will be easy to you to prepare for the examination. The record of score of Mathematics and History in main examination is also satisfactory. But if you are comfortable to these subjects, then you can take these subjects as your optional paper in the examination. Best of Luck

the MAINS EXAMINATION is usually conducted by upsc in the month of OCT
as per the subjects selected by the aspirants.
for the MAINS EXAMINATION the optional subjects available for the aspirants are as follows:

Hindi, Kannada, Kashmiri, Konkani, Maithili,
Malayalam, Manipur, Marathi, Nepali, Oriya,
Pali, Persian, Punjabi, Russian, Sanskrit,
Santali, Sindhi, Tamil, Telugu, Urdu.
as you mentioned that you good in MATHEMATICS and HISTORY
this can be the considered as a good combination of the subjects for the mains examination.
MATHEMATICS is tough choice for this examination rarely aspirants go for this subject.
but if you think that you will be good with it then you can surely go for it
but remember you have to study really hard for this subject.
as far as history it will the perfect second option as it will allow you to
give more time to mathematics for the preparation.
it is considered as scoring subject for this examination.
so you can go for it.

Re: Suggest two good optional subjects for UPSC mains exam. How good are Maths and History for ECE graduates?
dear friend,
there are lot of options for you .
here are some suggestions for you in which you can pick two subjects for your mains examination.
Optional subjects:
Commerce and Accountancy, Economics, Electrical Engineering, Geography, Geology,
History, Law, Management, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Medical Science, Philosophy,
Physics, Political Science and International Relations, Psychology, Public Administration, Sociology,
Statistics, Zoology Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Science, Botany, Chemistry, Civil
Engineering.
but remember there are some restrictions in selecting the subjects.
The following combinations not allowed are:-
Combination of two literatures in
the above list.
Political Science & International
Relations and Public Administration
Commerce and Management
Anthropology and Sociology
Maths and Statistics
Agriculture and Animal Husbandry
and Veterinary Science
Management and Public
Administration
Animal Husbandry & Veterinary
Science and Medical Science
Any two branches of engineering.
but as you mentioned here about mathematics and history than according to my opinion these are the best combination for an ECE student, because maths is very strong part for engineering students so you have to work on history and if you do it than you can crack the exam easily.
so good luck for the exam!@
