Union public service commission is a commission of members with a chairman, which work according to the rules specified in our constitution. It recruits people in two ways.
1) competitive exam is conducted for various top level posts like IAS,IPS etc.
such competitive exams include civil services exam, combined medical services exam, combined defense services exam, Special class railway apprentice exam, Indian forest service exam, National defense academy exam etc
Such competitive exams are conducted every year and follow a fixed schedule for issuing notification, conduct of exam , result publication etc.
2) direct recruitment
for posts such as EPFO commissioner, drug inspector,principal for govt. colleges etc are recruited in this manner. Such recruitment do not have any fixed schedule. Advertisement is released based on vacancy. Depending on number of applicants there may be written exam or a direct interview
