Dear Aspirant
If you are branch paper is among one of the following Electrical Engineering,Mechanical Engineering or Civil Engineering and you have command over your branch paper then you don't have to think for that you may prepare well but if you are not good in your branch paper then you have to select optional paper and do preparation accordingly.
Beside that generally engineering graduates have less aptitude for general studies So they have to work hard and intelligently for improving these areas.
engineering student have to study their whole course if they opted their respected stream as a optional subject it might be a wrong choice if u didnt have a good command over your whole subjects u have to face 9 papers in mains so try to chose easy subjects in upsc mains the selection depend upon how good you are in your subjects.....
Dear,
Engineering papers are quite tough as compared to arts subjects, because of this many engineers take arts subjects as their optionals.
If you are planning to take Engineering subjects as your optional, you should have command/grip over it.
Another problem which engineers are facing is the General Studies paper which includes History, Geography,Polity and Economics.
But, don't loose your hope as many engineers clears IAS exam yearly.
All The Best.
