    Hi aspirant
You should choose the subject of your own stream.....& ....according to your strength.
In my opinion Public Administration is better as it gives the idea how to work done by IAS.

Re: Best optional subject option between Psychology and Public Administration?

First of all I would like to congratulate you that you are confident about your result and wants to prepare for main examination but looking confused in two different subjects that are - Psychology and Public Administration because according to the rules, you may select any one optional subject in main examination from the list given in notification or in application form of main examination so here you should care more because there will be two papers based on selected optional subject and if you choose wrong one then this may become the cause of your less score in examination so think about it more before selection

You should see your graduation course or PG if have completed because relevant subjects are really helpful in scoring more marks in examination of ICS Main so if you have completed your bachelor's degree in Public Administration as specialization subject or major subject then you must choose this because as for as my views are concerned that you have enough knowledge about that subject from your UG or PG so this will be really helpful for you to make you eligible for personality test and if you completed Psychology at your graduation level then you can easily select this subject and if have completed both subject on UG or PG then see only one which is most interesting of your academic life and choose that because this is the question of 500 marks that are most important in main examination

If you take suggestion from your senior students in coaching or teachers then they may also provide you a right way but finally everything is based on you and that will be final after your personal selection and choice so you should keep your interest first and shortlist anyone subject out of these two and start preparing harder by using various books and revising them again and again

For complete syllabus of both of these subjects you should download this attached notification and read carefully then decide that which subject will be easy for you to qualify after hardcore preparation because reading syllabus is also necessary so you may decide on this basis too

    All the best

    Hello Friend ,

I would suggest you to go for that subject which you are interested in and you

    are
best . Since you are confused with the two subject that is between

    Psychology
and Public Administration , i would suggest you to go for Public

Administration because this subject is related with current affairs topic and

mostly deals with the practical aspect that we are going through .

So opting Public Administration would be helpful for you rather opting for

psychology subject as an Optional Choice for mains Exam .

    GOOD LUCK !

    Hello Friend,

UPSC conduct civil service exams every year for IAS, IPS, IRS,IFS's etc.The exam consist of 3 phages:
    1.Preliminary Exam
    2.Main Exam
    3.Interview

The preliminary exam is just a qualifying exam. The questions are of objective types.
After qualifying in the preliminary exam one can eligible to appear the Main Exam. For Main exam you can choose 1 optional subject in your choice.

It is best for you to choose the optional subject in which you should complete your Graduation or post graduation. Its help for you to secured a good rank in your exam.

Psychology & public Administration both subjects are best but the subject selection is depends on the candidates interest or choice. So,the choice is your's.

    Dear Aspirant

Both Public Administration and Psychology are good optional. If you have interests in psychology then you may select psychology as one of your optional. But Public Administration will be more better as it covers the topics of administration. Public Administration will help you to cover topics like on Indian polity & Constitution which will help you solving general studies question besides these it will help you in solving main paper General Studies paper 2 .See public administration which will be of great help for you.But if you have interests in it then you should opt it.I am saying you this because you have to appear 500 marks conventional optionl paper. So scoring good in that will play a crucial role .Besides this it is a literature paper and questions are asked indirectly so you need to understand well.Hope you understand this. All the best

Choice of subject depends on you completely. You should check yourself which subject you are more confident by checking previous year question papers of Civil Services in both the papers. If you think you are equal on both the papers, then you can opt for Public administration. It will also be helpful in the other papers as well in the Mains and the prelims also.Public administration paper is scoring than Psychology but it depends on the candidate opting for the paper and not just the choice of paper that decides your marks. All the best.Do not forget to check the syllabus and previous year papers of both the subjects on the website of UPSC at www.upsc.gov.in

Re: Best optional subject option between Psychology and Public Administration?

Both Sociology and Psychology are good subjects (scoring and successful), but, Sociology is also relevant with the General Studies paper whereas Psychology is not. Sociology helps in the Issues of Social Relevance section of General Studies paper and also in the Essay paper (wherein 2-3 topics out of 5 are based on Social issues).
Also, sociology will be more relevant in case the pattern of the Mains examination changes in the near future.
