YES, you can Prepare for the IAS exams that is UPSC Civil services Exams without any coaching
In the coaching also you are taught from the books and notes.
In the coaching you are given guidance and if you want to succeed than you have to do self study

If you do not want to join a coaching that first thing is that you have to get the syallabus for the UPSC exams
Arrange for books for each topic and subjects
    Make a study plan
    Study atleast 7-8 hours daily
Read two newspapers daily like Hindu and Economic Times
Read Magazines each month like Pratoyigita darpan, manaorma year book etc
Solve previous years papers for preparations of the Prelims exams.
In the mains exams there are two optional appers, so you can choose subjects that you may have studied in Graduation.

To succeed in this exams you require lot of hard work.
You have to study each subject in depth and retain things in your mind that you have studied.

Yes, you can start your preparation by yourself and no mandatory to take compulsory coaching. If you prepare by your own you have to make a lot of efforts to get success. Else you can take coaching from reputed organizations.

Re: Can I prepare for IAS exam without taking coaching? If yes how?

Yes dear definitely you can prepare for IAS Examination without joining any coaching institute but it is not so easy and if you think that you can easily crack IAS examination without assistance of any good and successful people and you will find some talented persons in coaching institute and i would like to tell you some following profits of coaching institute first

    1. Complete Support and help in your study
    2. Full Study material according to new examination pattern and syllabus
    3. Strategy to prepare for examination with guidance
    4. Enough help in various types of problems related education and career
    5. Enough competitive environment
    6. Practice test facility with learning facility
    7. Interview Process cum personality development classes
    8. monthly and yearly magazines
    9. Online/Offline Test series conducted by coaching to analyze study level of students
    10. Full Motivation and Encouragement for study and career

Now if you want to avoid all these above mentioned profits then you may prepare yourself but it would be tough for you and you will have to give more than 15 hours everyday for your study and you may not give this much time yourself for your study because after studying more than 6 hours every aspirant does not feel good about preparation but if you want concentrative study then you must join any good coaching institute and when you will check your level of study in coaching and find yourself nothing in front of other students then you will get the knowledge that why should you join coaching institute and if you do not want any coaching due to some other unforeseen circumstances then you may start your preparation at home by using these following books for IAS Examination

    1. Bipin Chandra - Indian History

    14. Yojna
    15. Economic Times, Economic Survey
    16. Ram Ahuja - Social Issues
    17. NCERT and Spectrum All Level Books

Dear with the help of these books you should make a good time table which should be suitable for you and during to study hours you should not be disturbed from any work or anything and keep your study continue without stopping anything and if you will provide 2 hours everyday for each subject then you can easily cover entire syllabus before examination then you should use some previous years question papers and solve all those papers to make very good practice
