Dear,
it is not compulsory for the civil service exam. any candidate appear in the exam without take the admission in any coaching institute.
if the candidate has own abilities to easily crack the exam or easily prepared the exam.
coaching center is only give the proper guide lines to student how to crack the exam,

Dear friend,
it is good that you want to go for
the answer of your question is absolutely 'no'
there is no any restriction of joining any coaching institute,
coaching institute doesn't give you a guarantee of selection. It is just for exatra guidance,.
There is no any criteria about the same in the notification of civil services examination ,
so you need not to join any coaching institute to be eligible for the examination,
but yes if you feel that you need extra guidance than you should definitely join a good institute for coaching, because this is not a simple and very easy exam it is one of the quite tough examination.
good luck.!!
Dear Friend,
No it is not compulsory to take coaching to prepare for UPSC Examination.
Infact no coaching is compulsory for any examinations.
Coaching is taken by student according to his own intellectual level.
If you are well enough to prepare yourself on your own than you don't need Coaching.
Many IAS toppers prepared themselves without any sort of Coaching.
So in the same way if you think you are capable of preparing yourself and know how to prepare for examination than Coaching is not needed.
But if you have lot of difficulties in studying and understanding the syllabus of UPSC Exam than you can take coaching.
But let me tell you that today that Most of coaching are focused only towards result oriented and money oriented.
They don't teach anything out of their context or deeply in to any subject to make the student understand better.
You need to find it on yourself about good coaching classes with reasonable fees in your area.
All the best.
Regards.
