The selection that which exam either IES or IAS totally depends upon your qualifications.IAS stands for the Indian Administrative services which comes under the civil services examinations.
If you have completed your bachelor's degree in any stream then you are eligible to give civil services examinations.Final year candidates are also allowed to give his exam
But the examination for Indian engineering services is separately organised . Bachelor's degree in engineering or technology is required to appear for the exam in any stream form a recognised university
You have to select the subjects from the given four branches only:
1.Mechanical engineering
2.Electrical engineering
3.Civil engineering
4.Electronics and communication engineering
Note: The age limitations for both the exams is same that is 21-30 years for he general category.Relaxations is provided to obc and sc/st respectively.
2.The no of attempts are also same for both examinations that is 4 for general,7 for obc and no limit for sc/st respectively.

IES stands for Indian Engineering Services exam where the minnimum qualification is a b.tech degree.
Other qualificatins are:
Degree in :
� Electrical Engineering
� Electronics & Communications Engineering
� Civil Engineering
� Mechanical Engineering
or equivalent degree from recognized universities.
� M.Sc. degree or equivalent with Wireless Communication, Electronics, Radio Physics or Radio Engineering as a special subject is also acceptable for certain posts.
� Students of final year Engineering or equivalent degree are also eligible.
Age limit:
you must be in between 21 to 30 years.however there is age relaxation of 5 years for SC/ST/PD and 3 years for OBC category candidates.
IAS stands for Indian Administrative Services:

So if you are graduate then you can apply for IAS only but if you are a b.tech degree holder you can apply for both.

IES exam is only of engineers & IAS is for any graduate in any stream.
It depends on you where your interest lies and what is your qualification. If you want to make your future in engineering(i.e if you are B.E/B.tech), then go for IES. If you are interested in administrative work, go for IAS.

There are four categories
Category I�Civil Engineering.
Category II�Mechanical Engineering.
Category III�Electrical Engineering.
Category IV�Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering.
Age limit and age relaxation is same as the ias exam.
If your degree in the b.tech field then you are eligible for the ies and ias exam.
If your degree is no in theb.tech it is the other field then you are only eligible for the civil service exam.

As you are confused between the two exams, I am going to help you with it.
IAS - Indian Administrative Services
IES - Indian Engineering Services..
As you can see from the names, the IAS is one such exam which can be attempted by ANY graduate in ANY stream !
But the IES is open only for the Engineers. They can only be attempted by 4 types of Engineers Civil, Mechanical, Electrical and Electronics !
Now IAS is more tougher and have very few seats, but the IES is relatively less tougher and has more seats.
Age limits are almost same for both. So now you can decide as per your Educational qualification as to which exam you wish to appear.
