Being a beginner to government exams. I'm finding it tough to figure out the difference between UPSC and IAS? Are they both same? Some websites stating as UPSC exam while some are writing as IAS exam. I'm little confused with such bifurcated articles.

UPSC means Union public service commission. It is a commission consisting of a chairman and seven other members, who are appointed by the President of India. It is a constitutional commission, meaning that it was created in 1950, its rules, functions , how to select members, procedure to remove them etc are detailed in our constitution itself. Its function is to recruit people for the topmost posts in our country. Inorder to exercise this function, they conduct a lot of examinations.
    1) Indian civil service exam
This exam is the toughest one and selects deserved candidates for the topmost posts such as IAS(indian adminstrative service), IPS,IRS, IAAS etc
    2) Engineering service exam
for engineering posts in various govt. departments
    3) Indian Forest service exam
    4) combined medical service exam
    5)combined defense service exam
    6) National defense academy exam
    etc..
Thus UPSC is the recruiting body, so many people mention it as UPSC exam (which is wrong)

    Dear friend,

UPSC stands for union public service commission.

UPSC conducts civil services exam once in a year to qualify candidates for the posts of IAS,IPS,IRS,etc..

so upsc is a commission which conducts exam for the posts of IAS,IPS,etc.

UPSC exam is a very broader term.It cannot mean only the IAS exams but then people use it wrongly to denote only the IAS exams.

other than civil services exam,UPSC conducts various other exams like CDS,NDS,SCRA,IES,IFS,etc..

so UPSC exams are many and not only means IAS exams.

UPSC conducts civil services exam once a year.so if you want to become an IAS officer then you have to appear in the civil services exam conducted by the UPSC.

the following are the eligibility conditions to become an IAS officer

    a)AGE:
    general category:21 to 30 years
    obc:21 to 33 years
    sc/st:21 to 35 years.

A candidate must have attained 21 years and must not have attained the age of 30 years as on 1 august in the year of examination

    b)QUALIFICATION:
the candidate must hold a degree of any of universities incorporated by an act of the central or state legislatures of india or declared to be deemed as university under section 3 of the UGC act 1956.

    c)NUMBER OF ATTEMPTS:

    general categort:4 attempts
    obc: 7 attempts
    sc/st: unlimited attempts.

At a sum UPSC is a commission not a name of the exam.

Hope the confusion is clear now.

    All the best

    Hi Aspirant,

Friend here I would like to clear the deference between UPSC and IAS.

UPSC stands fop Union Public Service Commission.

UPSC is a Central government body which conducts the various competitive exams for the recruitment of various posts of Central government.

It conducts the exam for the officer rank posts and IAS is one of them.

IAS stands for Indian Administrative Service.

IAS is a post not an exam.

UPSC organizes the Civil Service Exam every year for the recruitment of post IAS.

This exam is organizes at all India level.

The exam becomes very competitive because lots of candidates participate in this exam.

So I hope you are cleared now about UPSC and IAS.

UPSC is an organization which conducts civil service exam for the post of IAS.

    Best of Luck
