You have to appear for Civil Services Exam to join Indian Police Service(IPS). The recruitment for IPS post is done by Civil Services Exam conducted by UPSC twice a year.
You can only appear in IPS Exam if you satisfy the basic eligibility criteria like

The candidate must hold any degree in any discipline from any recognized university

Special Physical Requirements For IPS

2.Min Chest girth fully expanded: 84 cm for Men and 79 cm for Women. Expansion of 5 cm for Men and Women.
3.Total amount of Myopia (including the cylinder) should not exceed minus 4.00 D and total amount of Hypermetropia (including the cylinder) should not exceed plus 4.00 D
4.Presence of Squint is a disqualification

You can become a powerful police officer in India by qualifying a exam which is following :
UPSC board conduct a separate exam for police services which called - IPS - Indian Police Service and if you have passed in graduation or pursuing final year of your degree or awaited for final year result then you can apply for this exam and your age should not be lesser than 21 years and more than 30 years to apply for this exam and if you belong to reserved category as - SC/ST/OBC/PWD/ESM then you will get the relaxation in upper age as per government guidelines which would be about - 5 years for SC/ST and ESM, 10 years for PWD and 3 years for OBC category candidates.
Exam Pattern : There are following three steps follows in IPS exam :
1. Preliminary Exam : This would a an objective type paper and you will face two different papers at a day and each paper contains 200 marks and qualifying in this exam is most necessary then you would be declared as eligible by UPSC board to apply for next step.
2. Mains Examination : This is a descriptive/subjective type step in which you would have to face various 7 papers and you will be given different types of topics in this exam and you have to write some short and long essays and guidelines and this would be a long step to qualify and if you make yourself qualified in this exam also then you would be eligible for interview process.
3. Interview Process : After qualifying in both prelims and mains exam you will get the call letter for interview process under UPSC board and you would have to face interview process which would be your final step to become a IPS Officer under Indian Government so you should prepare yourself for interview to perform well and if you show your efficiency to lead the country and other skills as - Management, technical then you will definitely be selected for this position.
To prepare for this exam you should join some coaching institutes and collect various types of knowledge and pattern from various coaching institutes and prepare hard for interview under any civil officer who has been selected for any civil post by UPSC board.
