There is no alternative to hark work.This is a difficult section as far as competitive exams are concerned.So if you lack practice then you would loose most of the time in this section and would end up making a mess of it.So you have to work hard for this section particularly.See you can't mastery over this section overnight. It requires daily practice.

At present the best selling book in the market is Dr.R.S Aggarwal Verbal and Nonverbal Reasoning.Most of the questions in every competitive exams comes from this book only.So get your own book soon and start doing each and every chapter from it.Initially you will feel boring but later on things would get interesting

Mathematics is very interesting subject it is very helpful mental exercises too.
A good learner is one who starts from basics.
Here is some tips and name of good books which is very helpful to learn basic concepts and getting good scores in any competitive exam.

1- Read table up to 20 (Helpful in quick multiplication)
2- Squares and roots up to 20 (cubes and roots of number become easy can say on your finger tips)
3- Please note down books name which is really too good to learn all the concepts,short tricks as well
