yes current affairs has a lot of weightage, not only in terms of pure facts, but also UPSC has started testing current oriented topics in traditional subjects such as History. every question asked in civil services exam, has something related to current affairs.
Look at one example from civil services preliminary exam 2012
A question was asked on the principles followed in sufism. At first look, it will appear as a question asked from History. But a deep analysis will tell you a different story. This question was asked because last year Pakistan president Zardari came to India to visit the famous sufi temple in Rajasthan. It was the first visit of its kind from a Pak president and it took forward the Indo-Pak relationship. So that question was linked to current affairs. This is what you have to break down and study. there were nearly 30% of direct current affairs question and the rest were linked to traditional subjects based on current happenings, thus you cannot ignore current affairs
Tips to prepare:
1) follow standard English daily. Take self notes
2) Read current orientation in traditional subjects. eg: suppose you read off violence in syria, then read about geographical aspects, cultural aspects of Syria, In this way you can cover both current affairs and traditional subjects
