Hi dear,if you are not able to go to an institution no need to worry at all....if you give your 100% and study for this exam,then you surely can crack the same.Just practice more and more previous years papers,you will get an idea of what type of questions come for this exam and be thorough with your basics in all the relevant subjects.First prepare well for the prelims and then choose your papers in the mains and study accordingly.All the very best!

subject selection to be done before hand
preparation for GK, ENGLISH, MATHS should be done regularly
keep an eye on current affairs
read daily newspapers and fortnight magazines
thorough knowledge about indian history

First of all you have to go through the Question Pattern for which exam you want to appear. You can download and print Previous Years Question Papers at www.upsc.gov.in
NCERT books are best for the basic knowledge because it covers full syllabus of UPSC.
You can also practice more and more MODEL Question Papers from a sample paper by which you can experience to the Questions coming in UPSC exams.
