hello,Don't worry at all if you don't want to go for coaching ,its a myth that people say coaching is must in exam with coaching you can crack examTips to crack UPSC exams* Read one good newspaper and two magazines for current affairs apart from Manorama Year Book for GK and Current Events.Instead of referring multiple magazines and newspapers, I suggest you just read one good newspaper and one or two magazinesfor current affairs. The Hindu is very reputed English daily and if you can get hold of it, go for it otherwise read The Indian Express /TIMES OF INDIA.As far as magazines are concerned, Civil Services Chronicle or civil services Times are both good magazines for current affairs and reading one will be enough. But you should surely read Manorama Year Book fornot just current affairs but more importantly to build your General Knowledge.* Read the past 5 years solved question papers before and after reading a topic. The best way to track your progress is to refer the past five years questions whenever you start a new topic. This way you know what's important and should be stressed upon. After you finish reading that topic refer the questions from that topic again and check if you can answer all of them or not. This way you know if you have left out someimportant points in the first reading and canattempt course correction immediately instead of waiting till the fag end of your preparation for IAS Exam in 2012.* covered the scoring topics earlyYou shouldn't just study the first topic that you come across. Rather, prioritize and plan. Topics like GK, Polity, Maps can be prepared quickly and fetch easy marks. Tackle them early to pocket 30-40 marks even before youstep into the exam hall.* make micro notes that you could go through quickly before the prelimsAspirants planning to prepare for the 2012 IAS Exam should make it a habit of writing important current event and GK snippets in adiary, register or flip cards on a daily basis which you can go through 15 or 20 days before the Prelimsgood luck....
If you don’t join a class
That is- you’re doing self preparation.
#1: don’t feel guilty
• First of all, throw away any doubt, guilt or inferiority complex that you have e.g.“I’m not going to Coaching so my success chances are less.”
• Don’t think in that manner. please avoid company of people who’re thinking in that manner. Because negative vibes are infectious. It creates demotivation and affects your studies.
• And once you’ve decided, then don’t doubt your decision or caliber.
• Success is very much possible, without coaching.
#2: Self control
• If you goto gym, you see other people are doing more exercise, and got better body than yours. It automatically motivates you to do exercise further.
• But if you’re at home, it is easy to lose track, and become complacent about preparation e.g. koi nai, thik hai, there are still many months left before the exam, I’ll ‘manage’
• Sorry you can’t manage. Weeks and months will pass like this and just 30 days before the exam, you’ll realize that you haven’t really prepared much throughout the year. Then you start looking for shortcuts i.e. readymade current affairs material etc. = #epicfail.
• Don’t let your mood dictate your studies. Spend majority of your day with books, magazines and newspapers only. (if you’re not a working professional).
#3: Company
• Make a few friends from the field, either in real life or on internet. Peer pressure helps in keeping the ‘tempo’ and motivation for studies.
• More time Management tips are given separately in the later part of this article.
I hope the coaching doubt is clear.
