the IAS exam is conducted by UPSC once in a year.
For this exam you must have to be graduate and your age must lies in between 21-30 years.

You can choose any of the subjects for the IAS exam

In the UPSC Prelims exams, there is no optional papers.
There are just two Papers and both are complusory.
Both these Papers are in objective mode.
In the Mains exams you can choose two optional papers from the below list of papers:

SO you should choose the subject in which you can understand the topics
choice of subjects purely depemds upon your individual interest., since you have studied microbiology and biotechnology you can opt botony,zoology,medical science or animal husbandry. These subjects are somewhat releated to your field., so they can be easy for you to tackle.

as you are from life science background,you can go with botany,zoology,agriculture,animal husbandry ,psychology,sociology etc as optional subject
so that you will fell easy while preparing for the exam,it saves time and you can remember easily and understand the concept very well right
or
in degree you might be having 3 main subjects right,one biotechnology and others two may chemistry ,or other then you can also choose chemistry as optional subject
