What are the advantages and disadvantages of choosing History/Public administration/Political science?

    Hi,

I am Nikhil, and I would like to ask that what are the advantages and disadvantages of choosing History/Pub. Administration/Political Sc.?

My personal view seems to be that studying history would help me with GS in both prelims and mains. But I also fear the course of History, as I have heard that its a huge course, and a lot of mugging up to do.

After reading the syllabus of Poitical Sc., I found that more interesting than Pub. Administration, but my elders are of the opinion of studying Pub. Ad.

Now I am confused. I do not have any background in these subjects but they are of my interests. Also, I have a background of Management, but I am not comfortable with numerical parts, however out of the syllabus mentioned, I have studied quite a bit of that in college, though at a less complex level maybe.

So I am pretty confused! Please help!!

    Dear Aspirant,
The Likes of INDIAN HISTORY & PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION are very healthy, scoring subjects and very advantageous.I believe that there disadvantages are close to negligible.
They have been a strong reason behind the successful students, who have opted for these, and trust me there are many.

Firstly,You have got it right that opting for INDIAN HISTORY would help you prepare for the PAPER-I of the Preliminary Exams simultaneously.
The same goes for the PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION too.It will help you at all the three stages namely,Preliminary exams,Mains exams and the Interviews.
Thus, opting for these would help you save time, and prepare well.

Secondly, these are highly scoring subjects and have a higher success rate when compared to the other lot of subjects. No doubt they are opted by the non-Arts students too.

Final and foremost, though the syllabus of these subjects seem vast, the Study materials, basically the recommended ones, are easily avail in market, and you can get these prepared through self-study.

However,You should choose subjects based upon your interest,so that you enjoy studying them.Remember that these optional subjects carry as much as 1200 marks, which would ultimately decide the fate of your final results.

Hence,if you feel that Political Science is rather interesting than Public Administration,GO FOR IT.
Do not follows others sayings as POLITICAL SCIENCE is also a scoring subject.

So,it is better IF YOU DECIDE FOR YOURSELF AND MAKE THE FINAL CALL.
TAKE YOUR TIME AND BE CAUTIOUS ON THE SAME TIME.
Work hard and you will definitely succeed.

    ALL THE BEST.

You can choose Sociology, psychology, philosophy or any other subjects. You are telling about History has huge course, But in History you only remember the important dates and names and works by popular people. You can then write it in upsc mains exams. No matter if you don't choose History. You can choose Sociology which is study of the Society. In this subject you have to remember only the studies of tribes society which is written by scholars. You can easily remember and right with your own mind with this subjects. This subject is so easy and you can write about anything happen and see in your society.

You have to choose the interesting subjects only. Means in which you have interest. If you have interest in Political Science then you can choose it. I think Political Science is more easy and good choice for you to crack the exam. Also you can choose Philosophy. But remember it used very hard words. But it only related to religion in which you can write with your own mind.

    Hi Aspirant,

Friend every subject has its advantage and disadvantage.

My some friend also preparing for IAS exam.

According to my knowledge I gain from them.

History, psychology are good optional subject to choose in mains exam.

History also cover the GS portion.

Public administration also is a good subject. It will also help you in administration after selection.

It will develop your views for social problem and how to solve them.

    How to handle casual problems.

But final decision should be your own.

    You should gathered others views.

And process them after that should take decision.

    Best of Luck
