Dear if you are starting preparation for General Studies subject then you should follow these steps in your preparation before starting preparation
* Collect complete and detailed syllabus of each topic asked in examination
* Sort out the syllabus and all topics according to your interest because you have to begin preparation from the easy part of the GS in that you should list all those topics and sections that are interesting for you and work over them then you should know that you have completed all the syllabus of easy topics then start on toughs
* Get suggestions of experts and other experienced persons to suggest some good books to study
* Keep at least 2 different trusted and genuine books for each topic that is asked in examination as if you study the part - History then you can use - Romila Thapar's Guide for Ancient History and Indian Culture and Bipin Chandra's book for modern history of India and keep a copy of syllabus in each book to remember again and again that what you have completed, what you have to revise and what you have to complete next
* Follow a strategy according to that you have to make any one topic sure in a day because general studies is confusing and if you see that you are able to study much then you can study another subject so you will not get bored by studying a long time for
* Keep your mind fresh and active and out of all other networks otherwise disturbance in your study will make you more behind than other participants
* Keep your current affairs updated by using some good magazines that are - Frontline, Wizard, Yojna, Civil Service Times, Civil Service Today etc. and get in touch with everything

General srudies is a tough thing to handle therefore it is very much necessary that you should follow up the right approach. As you have said that you want to start the preparation, then it is advisable for you that you should start with the current affairs section and start developing the habit of reading an English newspaper daily, preferably the hindu. Moreover you should also subscribe to the monthly magazine like frontline, civil services mentor, yojana etc which will help you to give an idea that what topics should be studied and how they should be studied.
