    Minimum education criteria = Graduate
Maximum age criteria = 28yrs (for General category and I think it is 32 years for SC/ ST categories)

How to apply:-You have to apply for UPSC (Union Public Services Commission) exam.

There is no optional subject so donot worry about that!!
the pattern for UPSc has changed as the Prime Minister has approved the proposal for introduction of Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT) in place of the existing Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination. The CSAT is expected to come into effect from Civil Services Examination, 2011.

It consits of two paper and each paper of Two hrs..

    Dear Aspirant,
=The first step to start for the preparations of the Civil Service Exams conducted by the UPSC,is SORTING OUT WHAT DO YOU WANT TO STUDY AND HOW MUCH TO STUDY.Everything starts from here itself.
=You must be very cautious about selecting the subjects.Being a Commerce student, and having TWO subjects to choose,I would recommend you to go for a COMMERCE SUBJECT and an ARTS SUBJECT.
=The subjects of these which features among the list of optional subjects are COMMERCE AND ACCOUNTANCY,INDIAN HISTORY,PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION,GEOGRAPHY,ECONOMICS AND POLITICAL SCIENCE.
=For preparations of the Commerce subjects,be thorough with your Graduation syllabus.Avoid selective study.Go through everything.
=The Arts subjects on the other hand are highly scoring. They have a proven success ratE,better than all other subjects.Hence choosing them is any day beneficial.
=Opt for the NCERT Books. There excellent content and brilliant representation of Data are very useful for all students.
=For preparations of the preliminary exams, you need to go about General Studies.Follow 'Pratiyogita Darpan'.Its a monthly magazine, renowned for quality GK.
Also get subscribed to 'The Hindu' newspaper,as it uses quality English to go with great news.
As per the Paper-1 of these Preliminary exams, you would be already done with the social studies subjects while studying Arts. This saves time and hands you an advantage.
=Use time well.Improve upon your writing skills.Get rid of the Grammatical and Spelling mistakes.
    =Maintain a positive attitude throughout.
=Self study is the key to success.
    Good Luck!!!

    Hi Friend!!

I appreciate your dream of serving the nation.

Firstly, you need to write Preliminary exam of Civil Service followed by Mains.

The qualification for the Civil Service is Graduation(Degree).

Coming to the Preliminary exam, it consists of General Science and Aptitudes.

And the syllabus for the Preliminary is cover everything intermediate level like GK,Biology, everything.

And the syllabus for the Mains is to select two subjects out of 25 subjects but a combo of same stream is avoided like (Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering).
And an Indian language out of 26 languages.

I'd suggest you to go through newspapers, history(Indian), Geography(India) And the problems arising in your state.
And reading the newspapers is just not the thing, you'd analyse the facts and analyse every stuff you go through.
The main important thing is to prepare notes of it. It helps you to reckon everything when you just have glance at it.

And preparing the notes is very good job because you'll never find anything in any book about certain topic which you surely find in dailies.
Go through two languages of dailies (one, perhaps English and second, your language).

And section of subjects for Mains depends on what course you do in your graduation.
After deciding the course, then go should go through previous year papers.

And you can also join a institute just 2years before writing the preliminary exam.

You should create your own time-table because proper planning and execution is more important for success.

More and more rehearsals are also important!

    Dear friend,

it is good that you want to go for civil services .

The first step to starting preparation is that you have to observe your self that what qualities you have and what you have not because positive attitude is necessary to become a civil officer .

And for that you have to prepare your self at the time of your college study, it means you have to start preparing for the same when you are in first year.

Because if you have basic knowledge than you can easily understand any topic .
And your graduation course give you 70% advantage in your examination.

Except these you have to do some more things like.

    * read daily some most popular newspapers like 'the times of india',' the hindu'.........

    * red some magazines like 'pratiyogita darpan', cronicals, current cronology and
about relation between the countries , external affairs .

    * try to improve your english and try to speak fluently.

    * IAS is considered to be the toughest exam of the country.

    * First step for IAs preparation is to decide the subjects in which you want to prepare for IAS exam.

    * Then second step is to collect study materials and relevant informations regarding your subjects.

    * For CSAT preparation you can refer TATA Mc Graw Hills , you can also take coaching for Csat preparation.

Re: What is the first step to start preparation for IAS exam?

    Hi friend,

Hope that you are in good health and good state of mind.

It's good to see that you are taking the exam seriously.
This kind of the enthusiasm is needed for a longer period of time.

Planning is imperative when you decide to appear for the Prelims. Deciding to take the exam 4 or 5 months before the Prelims is not a very smart strategy as you have to cover a wide syllabus and go through numerous books and magazines.

But I always advise you should start preparing at least 10 months prior to the next years Prelims and 12 months ideally, if possible. So if you are targeting IAS 2013 to be held in May 2013 then ideally start preparing from June 2012 itself.

The first step is to know the paper 1 and paper 2 syllabus in detail. Many IAS aspirants get confused about Prelims preparation and subject selection for Mains at this stage which is quite wrong. You DONT have to select optional subjects in Prelims, that task is for Mains exam. And quite frankly if you are just starting out dont worry too much about selecting optionals for the Mains at this stage. Rather you should concentrate on the Prelims preparation. Optional selection comes later after youve gained some knowledge of the Prelims topics and have developed a basic understanding about the Civil Services exam.

    Hope this information was useful!
Best of Luck for the exam!
