Choose any subject you are interested in. Every subject have equal chance of success. Though subjects like Public Administration, Sociology, Geography, Psychology and Philosophy have been witnessing more success rate in the last few years..
If you are Interested in UPSC Civil services examination then you have to complete your Graduate degree course and your age should between 21 to 30 years, upper age relaxation is applicable for SC/ST/OBC Candidates, Final year appearing candidates are also eligible for this examination.
For this year examination notification was already published and the last date of apply for this examination was already over. If you have already applied for the examination then please prepare well for the Preliminary examination. There are 2 papers in Preliminary examination and you have to cracked the Preliminary examination first, only then you will be appeared for Main examination. Preliminary examination is Objective and you have to give correct answer.
In Main examination you have to choose the Optional Subjects on the basis of your Graduation Only or as per your Interest. The list of Optional Subjects is availiable in the official website or in the Notification. So please check the Notification and check the Optional Subjects.
In Main examination there are 9 papers and you have to choose the subjects in main examination on the basis of Graduation. The Question Papers III to IX will be set both in Hindi and English.
You have to apply for the Main examination again, when you will cracked the Preliminary examination and you have to give Rs 200 for Main examination.

You have to choose your subjects from 42 Optional Subjects. In that list many subjects you can see from all stream. If you want you can choose Arts subjects like History, sociology, political science etc.
But, you can crack the exam in these subjects if you have good writing skills.

If you want to choose option subjects for UPSC examination then you have to complete Graduation degree and apply for Preliminary examination and other steps.For this examination you have to submit application forms fees of 200 Rs.
This examination divided into two category are following as :
1) Objective type
2) Subjective type

The optional subjects you choose is dependent upon the knowledge you have about them.Since the Civil Service Mains exams covers a vast syllabus in case for optional subjects,you need have complete knowledge about your subjects.
So,basically one of the subjects you choose must be from those that you have been studying since your graduation.This will help you have deep knowledge about it.
There are many other options to choose from but those from the ARTS section are considered to be highly scoring.These include PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION,INDIAN HISTORY AND GEOGRAPHY.So you can surely opt from one of these.

Optional subjects: Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Science, Botany, Chemistry, Civil
Engineering, Commerce and Accountancy, Economics, Electrical Engineering, Geography, Geology,
History, Law, Management, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Medical Science, Philosophy,
Physics, Political Science and International Relations, Psychology, Public Administration, Sociology,
Statistics, Zoology.
from the above mentioned subjects you have to choose any two of your interest & knowledge in that particular subject.
The following combinations not allowed are:
Political Science & International
Relations and Public Administration
Commerce and Management
Anthropology and Sociology
Maths and Statistics
Agriculture and Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Science
Management and Public Administration
Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Science and Medical Science
Any two branches of engineering.

If you are a medical student then choose medical science, botany & zoology as optional papers
If you are an Engineer, then choose physics, chemistry, civil engineering, mechanical engineering papers.
If you are from arts stream, then opt psychology, philosophy, sociology, public administration papers.
If you are from commerce stream, then opt commerce & accountancy, economics like papers.
Finally decision is yours.
