according to me a 10 hour study is enough for gate preparation.

As per my personal view book from G K publication is best for GATE preparations.
You must read and practice for minimum 4-5 hours a day to crack it.

there is many books available in market but it is better for u to prefer subject bies books for gate and you should study at least 5 hour a day cause cut of marks of gate are increasing every year

How many hours in a day should I study to clear this exam?

If you want to score good in GATE time is not important the important thing is your hard work, concept and practice. Study from now on wards very smartly. practice objective questions a lot. 1 year is a good time to prepare well for the examination.
For good result you can join a coaching center as well.

the above suggestions are good but with less time for preparation you have to study your class notes and the text books which you read in college during engineering.Don't throw away your college notes even though it is not upto the mark with preparation books because by just going through it you can have some idea and you don't need to start from basics. Practice previous and model papers for self assessment.If you start reading reference books now for knowledge you will end up with nothing in most cases.
