Yes it is compulsory to write the Civil Services Mains exams after clearing the CSAT with High marks.
UPSC conducts the Civil Services Exam(CSE)every year to make recruitments to 24 posts/services.
The CSE procedure is very rigrous and quite long.CSE are one of the toughest exams at the All India Level.
CSE is conducted in 3 stages :
1.Prelims/CSAT-stands for Civil Services Aptitude test which is conducted to shortlist candidates for the UPSC CS Mains exams.
It is a qualifying exam to become eligible to appear in the Mains exams.It consists of Papers 1 & 2 of General Studies and total marks is 400 marks.
High score in CSAT does not mean you can skip the mains exams.Mains exams is the real test of intellect and indepth Knowledge
of the candidates while CSAT is a simple test to gauge that the candidate has apptitude to appear in the Mains or not.
2.Mains exams-is conducted to test the real abilities of the candidates,their knowledge and intellegence not just their memory
power or reproduction of facts from rote learning.Mains consists of 9 eassy type papers and total marks is 2000 marks.
A candidate is fit to be a Civil Servant in future or not is tested in the Mains.
After clearing the Mains then only candidates are called for an interview.
3.Interview-is the test of personality of candidates and on clearing it selection is made to the Final Merit List.Interview is of total 300 marks.
It is thus compulsory to write the Prelims/CSAT,Mains and appear in the Interviews in a given year & clear all 3 stages to be in the Final Merit List.
Scores in the individual exams does not matter,one has to qualify each stage and rank in the merit list is important to get a post/service.

UPSC conduct the Civil Services Exam every year for the post of IAS, IPS, IFS etc.
It is conducted in three phases:
- CSAT
- Mains
- Interview
you have to clear all the sections then you are selected for the post of IAS, IPS, IFS etc.
CSAT is only for the pass for the mains exam. if you clear the CSAT exam then you are selected for Mains. Marks you got in CSAT will not carry to mains.
candidates are selected on the basis of Mains and Interview.
So, it is necessary to face all the levels if you want to get job.
Good Luck......
Civil services preliminary exam is only of qualifying nature , a screening test to select serious candidates for mains examination. Marks secured in preliminary will not be useful in the later stages. SO even you are the topper in preliminary exam, you will not get any benefit. You have to prove your mettle in mains exam. Mains exam is where the candidates' real ability is tested. Because in preliminary exam, you get to select the answers from given choices only. But in mains exam, you have to express your views, lot of opinion based questions will be asked. Thus your writing will show the evaluators (who are highly experienced people) what is your attitude in problem solving, critical thinking etc. Since preliminary exam is objective type, with just a bit of luck even the candidates who have not prepared seriously can clear the exam. But mains is purely conventional, without proper preparation you cannot even score a single mark. Mains exam only identifies the candidates who are really serious and prepared well.
Thus mains is the most important stage in recruitment for civil services, you can not skip it.
Dear friend ,
as you know that there are three steps in order to complete pass the examination successfully.
so if you want to become a civil servant than you have to appear in all the stages of the examination and have to pass all the stages ,

it is compulsory for all the candidates that he pass all the stages of the examination which are as.
* prelims examination.
* mains examination.
* interview.
dear friend ,
look.
you have no need to fear from mains examination because if you get good marks that means you have knowledge and skill and a knowledgeable person can pass any examination easily.
so don't worry and keep self confidence and appear in th examination with % preparation.
definitely you will get good result.
good luck and work hard.@@
Dear Friend,
The Union Public Service Commission conducts the Civil Services Examination every year for the recruitment of candidates for posts like IAS , IPS , etc.
The Civil Services Exam is conducted in three phases :
a) CSAT
B) MAINS
C) Interview /Group Discussion.
The Candidates who pass in the CSAT are selected to go for the MAINS Exam which is generally held after 3 months of the CSAT Exam.
After passing the MAINS Examination , successful candidates are called for the interview or sometimes Group Discussion too , passing which you get recruited for posts mentioned above.
So , i just want to tell you that no matter with how much high marks you have passed CSAT , you have to appear in these two examinations at any cost if you want to crack the civil services Examination.
This is the information i have to the best of my knowledge regarding your query. Hope the information will help you to the extent you want.
