Dear Friend
It totally depends upon what is your aim of life ,what do you want to achieve and what is ultimate goal .All the three IES ,PSU ,GATE are equally good .It depend upon your perception.
For some one IES will be his career goal, someone may want to join Public sector undertakings or someone ,may go for the Civil services examination.
First of all decide your career goal.Being a ,mechanical engineer you are eligible for all three:
1.Indian Engineering services : Bachelor's degree in engineering or technology is required for the exam
2.Public sector undertakings: Candidate must have at least 65% marks in all semesters in order to be eligible for the PSUs.
>>PSUs like NTPC,BHEL,SAIL,GAIL,ONGC,IOCL now shortlist candidate through the GATE score card. Then they take :
1.Group discussion
2.Personal interview to recruit candidates
3.Civil services examination : Bachelor's degree in any discipline is the minimum requirement. The age limit is 21-30 years.
If you want my opinion that which one will be beneficial ,I would say you to prepare and go for the Indian Engineering services as it is the best suitable services for an engineer. Please mind this my opinion ,you may differ from this .
So think yourself and according to your strength that which will be more beneficial for you rather on suggestions of other.
Hope it helps .If you want any more clarification leave a message here.
all the best for your career
