UPSC conducts civil Service exam in three stages which are as follows
Preliminary
Mains
Interview
In preliminary stage there is no optional subject. Here you would not have to choose any subject. There are only two papers of general studies to check the mental and logical ability of candidates. Each paper is of 200 marks.
In mains exam there is total 9 papers and 4 paper of optional subject. Its mean 2 papers for each optional subject. For mains exam you will have to choose two optional subjects. The major part of your success is directly depends on optional subject because optional subject contains 1200 marks and each paper contains 300 marks.
Therefore you should choose the optional subject very carefully and choose only those subjects which are familiar to you.
