    Physics and Mathematics are the most obvious subjects an engineer choose.
    Whereas, you are free to choose accordingly.

    In the Mains Exams there are just two papers in which you can choose the Optional papers.

    Below is the list from which these two papers can be chosen.
    Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Science
    Anthropology
    Botany
    Chemistry
    Civil Engineering
    Commerce and Accountancy
    Economics
    Electrical Engineering
    Geography
    Geology
    History
    Law
    Management
    Mathematics
    Mechanical Engineering
    Medical Science
    Philosophy
    Physics
    Political Science and International Relations
    Psychology
    Public Administration
    Sociology
    Statistics
    Zoology

    Choice of subjects should be on the basis of your intesrests in a particular subjects.
    Subjects which you understand easily and in which you are strong.

    hi,
    there is many optional subject which you an choose.

    you wan to choose for IAS mains exam,

    according to my view,
    you have to chose those optional subject in which you full interset

    in others words, you should choose your field/stream related subject.

    Hi

    If you have done your graduation in engineering then you can choose Physics and mathematics as the optional subjects.

    Or you can choose any of the subjects from the list of the Optional subjects of UPSC given below:-

    Engineers can any subjects for IAS exam as we know that no subject is more difficult as compared to any subject in engineering.Engineers have passed these subjects so they don't face more problems but still they are advised to take subjects where calculation and logical reasoning related questions are asked.Some subjects are-

    1 Maths
    2 Physics
    3 Chemistry
    4 Mechanical engineering
    5 Civil engineering
    6 Chemical engineering
    7 CSE
    8 ECE
    9 Electrical engineering
    10 Indian geography
    11 Indian History.
    12 Automobile engineering.
