in Cracking of UPSC Civil Services Exam both Compulsory and Optional subjects are important.
List of Compulsory and Optional Subjects for Civil Services exam:
1. For Preliminary Exam:
Compulsory Subjects: General Studies.
Optional Subjects: UPSC Civil Services Preliminary
Pattern is totally changed in this now
there is no optional subjects. and it
is now called CSAT(Civil Service
Aptitude Test).
2. For Mains Exam:
Compulsory Subjects: English and Indian languages,
Essay, General Studies paper I &
II

Your question is not specific.Upsc conducts many exam.
i will assume that you are asking for civil services exam.
in prelims level both the papers are compulsory.
in mains level following papers are compulsory:
*essay
*general studies
*language paper(if a candidate belongs to north east india then it is not compulsory)
*english paper
