Now for prelims only csat is applied so no subject optional is in pre , its only 4 mains.
preliminary exam consist of 2 papers paper 1 and paper 2,paper 1 of include questions related to general studies and paper 2 includes aptitude ,so choosing a obtional subject in preliminary has been removed .
Sorry but the options for choosing subjects is limited only to the mains exams conducted by the UPSC.
There is no such provisions now for choosing subjects in the preliminary exams.
The preliminary exams consists of two objective type papers carrying 200 marks each.
They cover the questions on general studies,Indian history,world geography,current affairs,basic numerical ability,reasoning,aptitude,comprehension,etc.
This exam is compulsory for everyone without any choice of electing subjects.
There is no optional subject in preliminary exam conducted by UPSC.Optional subjects should be selected for mains only.Preliminary exam is of multiple choice questions of two paper of total marks of 400.Preliminary exam is mainly on general studies,current affairs and aptitude tests.

* At present UPSC exam conducts CSAT for CSE and thus in prelims there is no option to change the subjects.
