Re: Right way for selecting optional subjects in Mains exam.

    hi,

if u get passed in basic exams then its very good and now u want to choose ur right subject any two from list.

accroding to me u have to choose subject that are not lengthy and diificult to learn at short time.

for that u can choose following way:

i think u have to ignor "social studies, gujrati, or any local language papers" because that all r lengthy and also marks lossing subject.

best way is if u r master in maths then u have to select maths and english u can get full marks in it at very short time.

or sanskrit is very easy subject u have to just covnert it into any local language and same pattern will be there for this subject.

    so u can choose;

    maths
    english
    sanskrit
techonocal subject that in it u have interest.

    all d best

Re: Right way for selecting optional subjects in Mains exam.

    Hello,

There is a process to choose optionals. You must follow it to get the best ones for YOU. Firstly, strike out the subjects from the complete list that you think you can't take in any circumstances. Secondly, go through the syllabus of each of remaining subjects and select the ones that you think you can manage. Thirdly, ask your more than one seniors who have actually given the exam with those subjects. Finally, make the decision about the subjects.

Mind it, the final decision will be yours and it must be based more on your interest in the subject, availability of good study material, availability of good tutor/guide in case you need some help during your preparation. Don't go by the experience of a single person. If you have right frame of mind, right approach, you can crack UPSC with any subject of YOUR choice.

    Details for prelims:
The exam is conducted in the month of May every year. It consists of two papers : GS and Aptitude test. The number of questions vary. There is 1/3rd negative marking for every wrong answer. It is of objective nature. Marks for this exam is not counted for final selection. This exam only qualifies you to appear for mains.

    Details for mains:
The exam is conducted in the month of Oct/Nov every year. It consists of nine papers :
GS(2), First Optional(2), Second optional(2), Essay, English and Hindi. There is NO negative marking for every wrong answer. It is of subjective nature.
English and Hindi papers are of qualifying nature where you have to score a minimum of 40% marks. If you fail to do so, other answer sheets won't be evaluated. Maximum marks for all other papers is 300 except for Essay paper which is of 200 marks.

If you manage to get 55% marks, there are 95% chances that you will find a place in the final list.

    Thanks,
