if you are B.E/B.Tech in CIVIL/MECH/ELECTRICAL/ELECTRONICS & TELECOMMUNICATIONS then only you can apply for IES exam.
syllabus for both GATE & IES are almost same. but you have to work much hard for IES comparing to GATE.
suppose if you get good qualified score in GATE means you can also apply for PSUs like BHEL,NOGC,POWERGRID,BEL,BARC,etc., or you can do higher studies.
if you clear IES exam means then you will be a central govt. GRADE A officer.
IES will be good option and it will be good career option in future for you, go for IES as you are from engineering background.. All the best..

ies = indian engineering service
if you have complete your graduation in the engineering it is depends upon you whether you want to go for gate or ies.
For indian engineering services the eligibility criteria is
candidate should have an engineering degree from a recognized university.
Candidates age limit is 21 to 30 years
candidate should be an indian
candidate may belong to any category for example. General,obc,sc,st etc.
If any candidate prepare for the ies then it the candidate will get more exposure in the indian engineering service than gate or graduate aptitude test in engineering.

date of notification 10-03-2012
last date for application 09-04-2012
exaqm date 15-06-2012
candidate can also get information from the upsc website or from the employment news paper at the opening of these vacancies.
If you want to do the master degree in IIT or NIT then and then you should prepare for the GATE exam but if you want the government job then you can go to the IES exam .
In both exam the syllabus is same so you prepare for the both exam also and you can apply for the both exam also , so first decide what you want to do the job or master degree then prepare for the exam . All the Best
I will suggest you that prepare for GATE examination as it is much easier than IES examination.
By scoring good score in GATE you have the chances for M-TECH through NIT's,IIT's besides that other psu's, many govt. organisation considers GATE score for the qualification.
only you have to appear for a objective paper for 2 hours.
WHILE
In IES there is general ability section is also besides that technical paper which means that you need to study arts field's also.

And IES stands for Indian Engineering service.
this is totally depends on ones site of interest.
This is very difficult to tell which is better.As these are all
different in there places.
ELIGIBILITY FOR IES EXAM
The minimum eligibility criteria required for IES exam is to be a engineer or you must have a degree of engineering. basically the given streams are acceptable
for this examination.
*CIVIL ENGINEERING
*MECHANICAL ENGINEERING
*ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING
*ELECTRONICS AND COMMUNICATION ENGINEERING
*or any equivalent degree
M.Sc degree or equivalent with wireless communication ,electronics,radio physics,etc..
The students who are in Final year can also apply in this examination.

its really good to go for IES,but if you will first prepare your self for your gate exam then you will be getting a chance to improve yourself in IES as there's not so much difference in GATE exam and IES.You can find your mistakes and your weaknesses to give your best in IES exam.So go for the first step and then move forward .

you first set your target which you want to opt but in my point of view you should go for GATE EXAM so that you can easily get a Govt. jobs and now this is eligibilty criteria for govt.jobs.
i will suggest to you GATE is a easy exam as IES exam ,,if you are get the class in Hyderabad for preparing GATE exam almost fees is 40000 per year after you will good score in GATE.

- After engineering one is left with two wide option either to do masters in Engineering or go for work either in public sector or private companies .
- To do masters in engineering one need to appear in GATE exam that is conducted by the Indian Institute of Technology . The exam is held every year and the score is valid for two years. GATE is conducted in all the engineering disciplines . The syllabus for the exam is same as the subjects that are dealt in bachelor degree in engineering
- If you prefer to do Service then prepare for the Indian engineering service qualifying which one is eligible to do job in various engineering jobs available under central government .
