difficulty level depends on your knowledge and preparation. But i can say what is difficulty people face
1) Lack of proper guidance, you have to prepare yourself
2) Number of people attending mechanical engg paper is very low. so number of candidate selected are also very low( when compared to other optionals)
if you consider yourself good in the subject, then go for it. When the going gets tough, the tough gets going
Dear friend,
There is no optional which is easy or tough
similarly there is no optional which is safe or unsafe
all these depends upon your perception.
upsc alaways try to maintain utmost parity between the optionals..
so if you have the interest study with dedication
it depends upon your hardwork
there are many people who have qualified in the past with this optional.
choice is yours

dear friend,
it is not like that it is fully wrong that mechanical paper is tough for UPSC Mains Exam.
always remember one thing papers are never tough it is upto your preparation level for the exam. If you are prepared well then it seems to you like it is very easy.
For mechanical paper your basics concepts must be clear. don't think that it is easy or tough just concentrate on preparation. always be Positive minded.
Good Luck.....
UPSC is a very tough exam because it gives you class-1 officer post so obviously there are number of participants so papers will be tough so that only eligible candidates who have knowledge are success to crack the exam .
One thing also not only Mechanical paper but other papers also are tough .
But if you done proper preparation for the subject then you will not face any difficulty because you spent enough time for that subject so that you will easily crack that subject .
You should do the preparation in right way for the Mechanical subject or any subject .
First of all you have to prepare the Mechanical branch subjects then after preparation solve the previous year question papers .
In short , if you prepared well then every subjects will make easy otherwise they will be hard .
BEST OF LUCK
