The written part of the MAIN Examination is generally conducted in October/November every year spread over a period of three weeks and consists of nine papers.
PATTERN OF MAIN EXAMINATION:
Compulsory:
Paper-I One of Indian language 300 marks
Paper -II English 300 marks
Paper-I and II are of qualifying nature only.the marks contains in them are not included in the ranking purpose.
Paper-III Essay 200 marks
Paper- IV & V General studies 300 marks each.

UPSC Civil services examination is Conducted by UPSC, Every year and the examination is conducted in 2 stages :
~~ Preliminary Examination : Also called Civil services aptitude test (CSAT)
~~ Main examination : Only for those who cracked the Preliminary examination
Preliminary examination will have 2 Objective papers and both paper is conducted in same day. But the Main examination is completed in 3 days.
You have to choose the subjects for Main examination on the basis of your Graduation, the List of Optional Subjects is availiable in the official website.
If your aim is to become IAS/IPS Officer, then please prepared well for the Preliminary examination, If you cracked Preliminary only then you will be eligible for Mains.

The duration of UPSC CSAT preliminary examination is one day and two hours for each subject. similarly for main examination, it is twenty one days and two hours for each subject.

* For preliminary one day is selected for exam. Preliminary exam conducted on one day in two sets of exam and here candidates selected for mains.
* For mains exam almost 21days and more or less days took place. A paper each day took place with intervals of one two days.

There is not a exact information about the duration of the UPSC exams but UPSC board conduct exams as following :
1. Preliminary exam I - There would be two papers in this preliminary exam in which both papers would contain 200 marks and you will get 2-2 hours for each paper and these both papers would be conducted in one day and this test would be in objective type format
2. USPC Mains exam II - There would be complete 7 papers in which the criteria is following :
1. Paper I - This would for one of any Indian language which would be chosen from the list
2. Paper II - English Language Test
3. Paper III - Essay Writing

6. Paper VI - Optional Subject
