Dear, the main difference between UPSC Prelims and Mains exam is that only those candidates who have qualify Prelims are eligible for Mains. Secondly, you can't appear directly for Mains. In Prelims Objective type questions are asked by the Commission while in case of Mains you have to answer in Descriptive type as in your Academic life. The Difference is given below:
*Preliminary exam is the 1st stage of the examination while Mains exam is the 2nd stage.
*Prelims qualify candidate are applicable for Mains while candidate can no appear directly in mains.
*Prelims Exam is consist of objective type question while Mains consist of essay types question.
*Prelims consist of Two Paper while Mains Consist of Nine Papers.
*Prelims exam duration is 2 hours while Mains have 3 hours
*Prelims carry on 400 marks while Mains carry on 2000 marks
After qualify Mains candidate eligible for Interview.
So both exam are compulsorily.
