Friend IPS is a post not exam and for the IPS post you will have to crack the civil service exam.
Yes friend, you can score well in civil service exam through Mechanical subject if you have deep knowledge and interest in the subject.
UPSC conducts the recruitment for the post of IPS through civil service exam.
This exam is conducted once in a year at national level and you need to work very hard because lots of candidates apply for civil service and competition will be tough.

In the prelims exam you have no need to choose any optional subject. There are only two papers in preliminary exam and it has qualifying nature and its mark will not be added in final merit list.
In mains exam you will have to choose two optional subject of your desire. Friend you should choose only those subject in which you are confident, familiar and deep knowledge of the subject.
It will be very easy to prepare for you.
