    Hi Aspirant,

Of course friend , the selection of math as optional subject in UPSC civil service exam is good and you gain good marks in this subject.

In the mains exam of Civil Service candidates have to choose two optional subjects.

In mains exam candidates should choose the subject of their interest and about that they are most familiar.

The good selection of optional subject is directly proportional of your success in mains exam.

So friend if you have good interest in math subject then you can choose it for mains and acquire good marks.

Besides math you will have to choose another subject.

    Optional subjects

    Agriculture
    Animal husbandry & vetinary science
    Anthropology
    Botany
    Chemistry
    Civil engineering
    Commerce and accountancy
    Economics
    Geography
    Indian History
    Law
    Management
    Mathematics
    Mechanical engineering
    Medical science
    Philosophy
    Physics
    Political science & international relations
    Psychology
    Sociology
    Statistics
    Zoology

In my suggestion you should choose History because this subject also will be helpful in the preparation of General studies paper in prelims exam.

    Best of Luck
