The UPSC conducts the CSAT examination where in the preliminary examination, there are only two papers i.e. General studies & English and these two papers are compulsory. But in main examination, there are two optional subjects that you have to choose.
You have to Choose two optional Subjects for Main examination and there is no need to choose for Prelims examination .
Main examination is descriptive examination and Prelims examination is objective examination .
Prelim exam can be divided into two papers and pattern of exam :-

now with the advent of new procedure for the UPSC prelim's you have NO burden of chosing the optional subjects as you need to give only two paper's
a) general ability
b) english comprehension.
while for the UPSC mains pattern remain as such in which you have to choose THREE subjects as an optional in which 2 OPTIONAL's are your main optional in which you have to score & their marks taken in consideration while preparing FINAL merit LIST for the same. WHEREAS 3rd ONE is to choose either HINDI or ANY other LANGUAGE of listed 28 language by UPSC., this optional only of qualifying nature only

In Preliminary paper now no choice for the optional subject. some pattern is changed for the upsc exam for preliminary exam.

Dear, For UPSC Prelims Objective type Questions are asked and here you have to attend two common question papers from where you'll be selected for Main Exam, Marks of Prilims are not included for ranking. For Mains You have to choose any two subjects plus one Indian Language subject, and you have to answer the same descriptively. The marks of Indian Language Paper are just for qualifying nature and not ranking.Except these subjects following papers are compulsory:- 1.English 2.Essay 3.General Studies So, go ahead... for upsc for Prelims no need to choose optional paper but for main u need to choose 2 optional . Prelims is only exam to screening there is no marks count in mains .

And some are optional means you have to choose
Compulsory subjects are english and gk and essay writing
And their is 2 optional subjects for or papers
And each paper have two exam of 300 marks per paper
And total 4 papers would be taken
