    Dear,
The UPSC conducts the CSAT examination where in the preliminary examination, there are only two papers i.e. General studies & English and these two papers are compulsory. But in main examination, there are two optional subjects that you have to choose.

now with the advent of new procedure for the UPSC prelim's you have NO burden of chosing the optional subjects as you need to give only two paper's
    a) general ability
    b) english comprehension.

while for the UPSC mains pattern remain as such in which you have to choose THREE subjects as an optional in which 2 OPTIONAL's are your main optional in which you have to score & their marks taken in consideration while preparing FINAL merit LIST for the same. WHEREAS 3rd ONE is to choose either HINDI or ANY other LANGUAGE of listed 28 language by UPSC., this optional only of qualifying nature only

    good luck

Dear, For UPSC Prelims Objective type Questions are asked and here you have to attend two common question papers from where you'll be selected for Main Exam, Marks of Prilims are not included for ranking. For Mains You have to choose any two subjects plus one Indian Language subject, and you have to answer the same descriptively. The marks of Indian Language Paper are just for qualifying nature and not ranking.Except these subjects following papers are compulsory:- 1.English 2.Essay 3.General Studies So, go ahead... Good Luck...
