UPSC is a government body that is responsible for hiring candidates for various departments such as :-
1. NDA
2. IAS/IPS
3. CDS
4. IFS.
You asked that it is essential to do 12th or not in order to give UPSC exam. Then dear let me tell you that all the exam in UPSC need candidates who has already completed his/her graduation apart from NDA exam that only needs 12th pass candidate. So minimum educational criteria that you must have is 12th class which is for NDA so yes it is necessary to do 12th to sit for any of the exams of UPSC.
After 12th you can give exam of NDA to get into defence and after graduation you can sit for other exam also which are mentioned above.

-If you are 10+2 pass then only you will be eligible for NDA and SCRA exam conducted by UPSC.
-If you are applying for NDA then you should be 10+2 pass with any subjects if you want to join only Army. But if you want to join Air force and Navy then you should have physics and maths in your 10+2 .
-For SCRA exam you should be having Physics and maths in your 10+2 then only you will be eligible for this exam.
-So if you want to give these exam then i would advise you to complete your 10+2 with physics and maths because it will create more opportunity for you.

On the basis of the 12th
- NDA
- SCRA
Eligibility criteria for the NDA Exam:-
Age limit for the exam is 16.5 years to 19 years.
There is no age relaxation for the reserve category.
For this exam only unmarried male candidates are eligible for this exam.
Female candidate are not eligible for the exam.
Qualification is required +2 passed/appear with the science subject from the recognized board.
You can apply the examination form by online method or offline method.
NDA exam conducted bi-annually.
Exam completes in one day.
Physical fitness
Candidate has eye sight 6/24, 6/24 correctable to 6/6 in each eye with glasses for tech branch &
Submarine Cadre and 6/60, 6/60 correctable to 6/6, 6/12 with glasses for the Naval Architecture Cadre.
For SCRA exam:-
age limit is 17 to 21 years.
qualification is required 12th passed .
for this exam the male and female candidates are both eligible.
Minimum height required-157c.m for men & 152 c.ms for women with correlated weight.
Minimum range of expansion after full inspiration should be 5 cm

1. NDA/NA
2. SCRA
Eligibility of NDA
Age limit for the exam is 16.5 years to 19 years (There is no age relaxation for the reserve category.)
