Which optionals should I choose for mains exam? Suggest a subject which can be studied without any external coaching.

    Hello,

I' interested in appearing for the UPSC Examination 2013. However, I'm in a bit of a dilemma over which subjects to choose for the Mains examination, so looking for a bit of advice..

I can memorize very well, and read a lot of material without any problems, so I'm looking for a subject which would pander to these. Also, I'm looking for a subject which I can study on my ow without any external coaching ( as I've to balance a job alongside).

    I don't want a technical or a language subject.

Keeping all this in mind, which subject would you suggest, please? History, pol. sc. and international relations, public admin ( doesn't go with pol. sc.) or socioogy etc.

Also, if I start preparing now, say at a decent clip, would I be able to complete everything for the 2013 examination?

    Thank you for your help.

    Dear Friend,

Very good query you have asked.
Most of the aspirant's are in the same dilemma as you.
Choosing optionals is highly personal choice which can differ from person to person.
You have to do your own research as to which subject's syllabus you find it convenient for you and can prepare with less hassle.
Also which subject's notes are easily available in your area and on the Internet.
Public Administration is one of famous subjects for optional subject.
But that does not mean that you should opt for it because everyone is opting the same.
You need to be unique and creative in a way to find out the solutions on your own.
The IAS examination is all about putting your highest intellectual ability in front to crack it.
There are many popular optional combinations candidates opt for.
    For e.g.
    Pub. Adm. + Sociology
    Pub. Adm. + Psychology
    Sociology + Political Science.
    Political Science + History
    Pub. Adm. + History.
    etc etc.

You should be at the position to decide on yourself as to which optionals to choose.
Because this examination is all about finding self ability.
You can go through syllabus of the subjects you find interesting and do your own research on to it as to whether can you manage it in short time, are the sources available within your range etc.
You can also discuss this with your elders who has knowledge of UPSC examination.

About your preparation time, you should start as earliest as possible.
the earlier you start for preparing the better will be the chance to cover maximum syllabus.
Most of the experts say to start preparing for atleast 1 year before the examination date.
So I think you have ample time to start preparing for CSAT and Mains.

    Hope it guides you well.

    All the best for preparation.

    Regards.

    dear friend,

according to mine knowledge and as you said about you, you must choose History and Public Administration.

it would be very helpful for preparation for UPSC exams. It is easy to understand subjects. so, you also no need to take coaching from anywhere. and you can crack the exam via self study.

you must also solve previous year papers for preparation. which will help you in cracking the exam.

    Good Luck.....
