First of all i tell you what is UPSC ? , Why it is conducted ? , What is the exam pattern and eligibility criteria ?
So UPSC states for Union Public Service Commision , UPSC exam conducted every year for the post of IAS , IPS , IFS i.e. Class-1 officer .
Who Can Give The Exam ?
Every Graduate Candidate can give the exam .
But one should fulfill the following criteria :
-> one should done their graduation from any recognized university
-> A final year student can also eligible for applying the exam , but before the Main exam , one should done the graduation.
-> Age limit is 21-30 for general cast , 3 years relaxion for obc , 5 years relaxion for sc/st/ex-serviceman , 10 years relaxion for physically handicapped .
-> Maximum 4 attempts are allowed for the general cast , 7 for obc cast and no limit for the no of attempts for the sc/st cast .
So anyone who fulfill the above criteria are eligible for the exam .
The exam Pattern :
--> Exam consist three parts :
1. Preliminary Exam
2. Main Exam
3. Interview
Now The preliminary Exam consist two papers
1.General Study
2.Any one optional Subject
After passing this exam , Selected candidates go for the Main Exam .
One thing considered that Preliminary exam only taken for the selection of Candidates for Main exam , its marks are not considered in Final Merit List .

UPSC is a commission which conducts many exams in which 'Civil Service Exam'(CSE) is one of them.
CSE has the most popular misnomer 'IAS exam' or 'UPSC exam'.
There are three phases in the CSE:
1) Preliminary
2) Mains
3) Interview
Coming to Preliminary:
There are two papers in the prelims.
Paper I : Current Events, Histroy , Geography , Indian Polity and Governance, Economic and Social Development, General Issues on Environmental Ecology and Bio-Diversity and Climate change.
Paper II : Comprehension, Interpersonal Skills, Logical reasoning and analytical abilty, Decision-making and Problem solving, General mental ability, Basic numeracy.
So you need to cover all that subjects to get through the prelims.
Coming to MAINS:
You need to select a language from a list of 26 languages.
And you need to select any two optional subjects from the list of 23 optional subjects.
