"Dear, your question is not cleared. Actually UPSC held many exams for different Departments like for Diffence (NDA, CDS), civil services, Indian forest services, etc. But for your help I will provide you Compulsory subjects as general are as follows:- (1) ENGLISH (2) GENERAL KNOWLEDGE (which includes physics, chemistry, maths, numerical ability, reasoning, current affairs etc.)
For CIVIL SERVICES PRELIMINARY EXAM:-"The Examination shall comprise two compulsory papers of 200 marks each.
NOTE (i) Both the question papers will be of the objective type (multiple choice questions). (ii) The question papers will be set both in Hindi and English. However, questions relating to English Language Comprehension skills of Class X level will be tested through passages from English Language only without providing Hindi translation thereof in the question paper.
(iii) Details of the syllabi are indicated in
Part A of Section III.
(iv) Each paper will be of two hours duration.
Blind candidates will however, be allowed
an extra time of twenty minutes at
each paper. "
AND FOR CIVIL SERVICES MAINS:-
"The written examination will consist of
the following papers :
Paper I One of the Indian 300 marks

selected by the
candidate from the

since upsc pattern for civil services PRELIM got changed from the last year, so there is no compulsion of selection compulsary subject unlike to that was earlier happened in previous years.
Now every candiate have to appear for the general ability question paper (you can that like aptitude level type paper which usually conducts in many examination)

- Current events of national and international importance
- History of India and Indian National Movement
- Indian and World Geography - Physical, Social, Economic geography of India and the World.
- Indian Polity and Governance – Constitution, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Rights Issues, etc.
- Economic and Social Development – Sustainable Development, Poverty, Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector Initiatives, etc.
- General issues on Environmental ecology, Bio-diversity and Climate Change - that do not require subject specialization
- General Science.
- Comprehension
- Interpersonal skills including communication skills;
- Logical reasoning and analytical ability
- Decision making and problem solving
- General mental ability
- Basic numeracy (numbers and their relations, orders of magnitude etc.) (Class X level)
- Data interpretation (charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency etc. -Class X level)
- English Language Comprehension skills (Class X level).
[/FONT]The syllabus is said to change for the UPSC-2013 examination.(Not sure!) So please do keep yourself updated about the same.
- Questions relating to English Language Comprehension skills of Class X level (last item in the Syllabus of Paper-II) will be tested through passages from English language only without providing Hindi translation thereof in the question paper.
- The questions will be of multiple choice, objective type.
- A set of sample questions for both Papers would be put on the UPSC website http://www.upsc.gov.in in due course for reference of the prospective candidates.
