The Indian Revenues Service (IRS) is a premier Grade "A" central civil service of India and is concerned with the administration, collection and policy formation of taxes of its two wings namely Customs and central excise (indirect taxes) and Income tax (direct taxes).The officers of this service work under either the Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC) or the Central Board of direct taxes (CBDT) in the Department of Revenue under the Ministry of Finance.
IRS officers are selected by Civil Services Examination conducted by UPSC.
Required Qualification to appear for Civil Services Exam
-You should have passed Graduation degree in any specialization from recognized Institute.
-You are for civil service exam while in graduation final year.
-UPSC Civil service exam has no restriction on graduation percentage.
-Your Age should be within the limit of 21 to 23 years.
-You must be a citizen of India.

The eligibility criteria for appearing in UPSC exam is Graduation in any stream from a recognized university.
The Age limit for UPSC exam is 21 to 30 years on 1 August of Exam Year i.e. If you are appearing in 2012 UPSC exam then your age should between 2 August 1982 to 1 August 1991.

There are two types of written examination in UPSC.
UPSC Prelim exam and UPSC Mains exam. You will appear in UPSC Prelim exam first in which Objective type Questions are asked from General English, General Studies etc.
For UPSC Mains you have to choose Subjects. There are total 51 Optional Subjects in which 23 are from main subjects and 28 Language Subjects like Hindi, English, Bengali etc.

The complete eligibility criteria for the Civil Service exams are mentioned below ::
01. NATIONALITY.
You must be a citizen of India,
or,You must be a subject of Nepal or Bhutan,
or,You must be a Tibetan refugee settled permanently in India before 1962.
02. AGE LIMITS.
You must be 21 to 30 years of age.
However, the upper age limit is relaxable by 5 years for SC/ST & ex-servicemen and by 3 years for OBC & Physically Disabled.
03. EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS.
You must have completed your Graduation or equivalent from a recognized university with any subject or stream.
Final year students are also applicable.
Only passing percentage is required.
04. NUMBER OF ATTEMPTS.
For general category : 04
For OBC candidates : 07
For SC/ST candidates : Unlimited.
