in my opinion history is a very good optional subject in civil services examination since history has less syllabus compared to other subjects. history is easy to tackle since we have studied history from our childhood, it never changes. the study material and teachers are most easily available. you can also tackle this subject without any expert guidance.
all the best

Dear Aspirant
You may take history as one of the optional. But don't get frustrated in the middle as the syllabus of history is very vast. You have to memorize lots of things. So you set deadlines for completion of your topics.Develop different interesting ways of memorizing dates.Try to study subject in an interesting manner like mind map,use of mnemonics. Most importantly keep yourself motivating.
Dear if you are going to take history as optional subject for both papers for main examination then this is a right subject because history covers a major part in both prelims and mains examination of general studies section that is why being good command over history is most important to be covered for IAS examination
You must choose this subject without any problem but only after analyzing well before selection of this subject because it has huge syllabus and that may be asked from any part of it that is why be careful before selecting any subject for main examination because there will be two papers and if you choose any wrong subject by mistake that is not interesting for you then you may get big loss of marks in main examination and papers of optional subject contains 500 marks that are most important for you and these papers are considered as most scoring papers in main examination because you select your favorite optional subject that you have already completed or completing with your bachelor's degree or any other course
If you have completed History as mandatory subject at your graduation level then also it would be good for you because when you have already completed then it will not create problem for you and if you are interested in reading history then also there is no problem but if someone has suggested you to take this subject for both papers of main exam then analyze before taking this because once your choice will be locked you will not be able to change your choice so think about it
If you choose then you have to revise this subject again and again then only you will get good command over this subject and use some good books as - Romila Thapar, Bipin Chandra etc. books for this subject to get more knowledge and prepare according to the provided syllabus by the board in official notification that I have attached below, please download
Believe in yourself that you can cover all parts of this subject and start study by giving more time for this subject so you could score good marks
All the best
