PAPER-I : General Ability and Intelligence
(The questions in this paper will be of Objective - Multiple Answers Type - in which the questions will be set in English as well as Hindi.)

PAPER-II : Essay, Pr�cis writing and comprehension
(In this paper candidates will be allowed the option of writing the Essay Component in English or Hindi, but the medium of Pr�cis Writing and Comprehension Components will be English only.)

Upsc has changed its prelims pattern from the year 2011 onwards.now the optional papers have been removed from the prelims level.
now you have to appear in two papers.paper 1 will have general studies and paper 2 will be an aptitude test.
you hav to appear in both the exams in the same day.
the following is the ayllabus and you have to prepare for each topic thoroughly.
Paper I - (200 marks) Duration: Two hours
Current events of national and international importance
History of India and Indian National Movement
Indian and World Geography - Physical, Social, Economic geography of India and the World.
Indian Polity and Governance � Constitution, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Rights Issues, etc.
Economic and Social Development � Sustainable Development, Poverty, Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector Initiatives, etc.
General issues on Environmental ecology, Bio-diversity and Climate Change - that do not require subject specialization
General Science.
Paper II- (200 marks) Duration: Two hours
Comprehension
Interpersonal skills including communication skills;
Logical reasoning and analytical ability
Decision making and problem solving
General mental ability
Basic numeracy (numbers and their relations, orders of magnitude etc.) (Class X level)
Data interpretation (charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency etc. -Class X level)
English Language Comprehension skills (Class X level).
Note -
Questions relating to English Language Comprehension skills of Class X level (last item in the Syllabus of Paper-II) will be tested through passages from English language only without providing Hindi translation thereof in the question paper.

The UPSC civil service preliminary examination known as CSAT(civil service aptitude test) for the year 2013 will have two compulsory Papers of 200 marks each and of two hours duration each. All questions are of objective type. The marks scored in the CSAT 2013 will be used for determining qualified candidates for the Civil Services (Mains) Exam 2012 only.
