hi prem,
As you know ias exam is toughest lakhs of students apply for the exam..
here i will give the general trend and it may vary slightly year after year.
neraly 5-6 lakh students apply for the examination.out of which some 3-4 lakh appear for the exams in the prelims.
for mains some 10000-12000 candidates are selected depending upon the vacancy in a particular year.
for interview some 2000-3000 candidates are selected base upon their performance in the mains examination.
finally some 800-900 candidates are selected for various posts.
you have to get some rank below 100-120 to get in to IAS if you belong to general category.
so the competition is very tough and prepare accordingly
all the best![]()
Dear Friend
IAS stands for the Indian Administrative Services .For this service ,Civil services examination is conducted by the UPSC which requires:
>>Bachelor's degree in any discipline from a recognized university.Final year candidates can apply for the exam.
>>The age limit is 21-30 years and relaxations applicable to sc/st and obc candidates in upper age limit.
>>You must be an Indian citizen.
How many candidates apply for the Civil services examination in every year?
To be very honest ,the number of candidates applying for the Civil services is not fixed and it varies from year to year. This is the most toughest entrance exam of India with three stages :
1.Civil services aptitude test
2.Main examination
3.Personal interview.
You can imagine the toughness by the analysis done below:
>>The total number of candidates applied for the Civil services exam in 2008 and 2009 is 3,18,345 and 3,43,554 respectively.
>>Similarly for the year 2010 and 2011 it was between 2.5 lacs to 3 lacs for the post of 965 and 750 respectively.
UPSC filters the best candidates through the three crystal clear mentioned above.
So you need to give your level best in order to stand apart from others and achieve success in this exam.
all the best

It depends on eligibility criteria and it can be defined... Approximately we can say around 9-10 lakh people apply for UPSC....
IAS stands for Indian Administration Services. IAS post is considered on of the top post of India. It is prestigious post and IAS officers get lots of facilities with high pay scale.
for IAS you have to write Civil Services exam that is conducted by UPSC.
For IAS almost every year 3,50,000 candidates appear for exam and at the end only almost 200 candidates are appointed as IAS officer. this number is not static it changes every year.
As there is large competition so you have to prepare well if you want to reach your goal.
for Civil Services exam you need graduation degree from recognized college or university.
your age must be within 21 years to 30 years. there is relaxation in upper limit upto 3 years for OBC and 5 years for SC/ST candidates.
Good Luck......
Well IAS stands for Indian Administrative Service. This is conducted by UPSC (Union Public Service Comission) every year for graduated candidates. There is no limit that this much number of candidates only should write the exam.Every year lacks of candidate from all over India will write this exam,it is said to be the most competitive exam in India. But half the number of candidates only enter into mains and then interview is there. ..... All the best....
hello prem
frankly speaking in case of any competitive exam, the number of seats will be less than the number of candidates applying for the for the exam.
then there would be further filtration for selecting the right candidate for the vacancy post.
generally this vacancy of post vary from year to year...so those who wants for that post had to work hard..
and must have the subject knowledge.
for IAS .you must know your duty and mentally and physically fit and fine..to apply for IAS you must qualify its eligibility criteria..
good luck
thank you
Approximately 600000 candidates apply every in UPSC exam
In this year 700000 candidates applied this exam.
