For this year Civil service exam, 2012:-
Date of Notification:- 04.02.2012
Last Date to submit form:- 05.03.2012(Monday)
Civil Service (Preliminary exam):- 20.05.2012(Sunday)
Civil Service (Main exam):-05.10.2012(Friday)
Generally The Preliminary Examination is conducted in May month.
EXAM PATTERN:-
1) Preliminary Exam:-
It is divided in to 2 papers each having duration 120 minutes.
Paper one consists of Indian history and national movements, geography, current events, general science, Indian polity and government, economics etc.
Paper two consists of Comprehension, Reasoning, Problem Solving, Decision Making, General Ability, English language etc.
2) Main Exam:-
It consists of 9 papers each having duration 180 minutes.
Paper 1:-Indian language
Paper 2:-English
Paper 3:-Essay
Paper 4 & 5:-General studies
Paper 6,7,8 & 9:-Four optional papers according to choice of candidate.
3) INTERVIEW:-
The candidates who have qualified in above two phases are called for interview.
UPSC civil service preliminary exam is held on May ,this year it will be held on 20.5.2012.If candidate qualifies in preliminary he can sit for mains exam which is conducted in October. In mains exam you can chose economics as one of your optional subjact.
Hi friend....UPSC generally brings out the civil services notification in the month of Feb-March and you got to apply within this period itself.After that,the prelims exam is held on May and if you qualify that,the Mains exam takes place at around Oct-Nov.Since economics is your subject,you can choose the same in one of the optional papers in the Mains.But first you have to clear the Prelims.For this year,the notifications and online application dates have passed.Definitely try next time.For more details visit http://upsc.gov.in

and the exam will be held according to the upsc procedure mentioned in advertisement.
if a person is honour in Economices he can also apply for 'indian rvenue services'
beside it there are also some another option to opt for a civil services.
