there is no restriction in UPSC regarding optional subjects.
you can choose any optional subject in UPSC which is listed in UPSC list.

-You can definitely opt for MATHS AND MECHANICAL ENGINEERING for the MAINS of the CIVIL SERVICE EXAMS,which are conducted annually by the UPSC.
-These subjects do feature in the List of Optional Subjects allowed for the Mains.
-Also they are NOT a part of the COMBINATIONS RESTRICTED for the Mains.
-Hence,you can go ahead with your choice.

Hi there!
Yes, you surely take them as the two optional subjects for the Mains of Civil Service.
But one thing you'd keep in mind that when you choose maths as the optional subject, the syllabus should be prepared is till graduation. In other words, you need to prepare Maths till degree level. As maths had lots of content like mechanical engineering, its like "Riding the two horses at the same time" when you choose Maths and Mechanical engineering. Don't go until you're well prepared to ride the horses.
I'd suggest someone to take easy subjects like Public administration and like that. Because Public administration only have small content to study under degree level.

and you can choose any subject . because there is no any criteria for particular subject .

the candidate who clear the PRELIMINARY EXAMINATION stage of the upsc civil services exam are called for the MAINS EXAMINATION. for which they need to select two optional subjects from the list of the allowed subjects for this exam. the subjects you can choose are
Agriculture, Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Science,
Anthropology, Botany, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Commerce and Accountancy,
Economics, Electrical Engineering,
Geography, Geology, History, Law, Management, Mathematics,
Mechanical Engineering, Medical Science, Philosophy,
Physics, Political Science and International Relations, Psychology,
Public Administration,
Sociology, Statistics, Zoology.
the combination of subjects that require similar preparation are not allowed by upsc.
