    Dear, Most probably UPSC already conducts a compulsory paper of English. Hence it might be didn't add the same. Adding of another paper as English Literature in its Optional Subjects, will give a positive chance to candidates who opt English Literature as their optional Subject. So, don't think much about this and choose another subject and do your best. Good Luck.

    Hello Aspirant,

    >> Yeah.You are right that English Literature is not a part of the LIST of OPTIONAL SUBJECTS allowed for the Mains of the Civil Services exams.
    >> I would help you get the reasons quite clear.

    # There is no university which offers a Bachelors Degree in English Literature specifically.It is English which is considered on a whole.
    # Now,Graduation being the minimum educational criteria for eligibility for the exams,English Literature misses on this.
    # Secondly,the syllabus of the subject is quite varying throughout the country.
    # No where is it common.While some schools give preference to dramas by The Shakespeare,other follow different bunch of anthologies and proses.
    # With every school following there own will,it is quite difficult to tie them in one bunch !
    # Further,with English already being one of the subject in the Language section,adding Literature will make it rather easy and the candidates wont be properly tested.

    # These are reasons enough for the UPSC to decide against adding English Literature to the List of Subjects.

    * Also the board of members of UPSC sitting right there are wise enough to make the perfect call.
    * Our discussions wont touch them in any way.
    * Hence,it will be better if you stick to the syllabus,instead of raising fingers.
    * There are many options you can choose from.
    * Just widen your thought process.
    * Start preparations likewise.
    * Get Going !!
    all the best.
